Our Solar Project

We are excited to introduce our latest initiative: a solar project aimed at transforming the lives of families within our community who lack adequate lighting in their homes. Without proper lighting, these families face significant challenges, including difficulties in studying and the dangers of using candles or kerosene for light.

Our goal is to use the funds raised to install small solar panels, batteries, and lights in the homes most in need. By providing a sustainable and safe lighting solution, we can enhance their quality of life and open up new opportunities for education and safety.

We invite you to be a part of this impactful project from the very beginning.  Each solar set costs £40. With your help, we have already made a difference for 15 families, bringing electricity into their homes for the first time.

Together, let's continue to illuminate lives and create lasting change

Selection Process for Our Solar Project

To ensure our solar project benefits those most in need, we have established a careful selection process. Families eligible for this initiative must be active participants in the Yes Uganda sponsorship program, currently lack access to electricity, and be among the poorest in our program.

This approach prioritizes those facing the greatest financial challenges and without lighting solutions, maximizing the impact of our limited funds. Our ultimate goal is to provide solar electricity to every family within the Yes Uganda sponsorship program, bringing sustainable and transformative change to their lives.

Why We Started the Solar Project

The inspiration for our solar project came from a poignant story shared by a young girl in our program. This 14-year-old girl came to our office, explaining that she was failing several subjects in school. When asked why, she revealed the challenges she faced daily. She leaves for school at 6 a.m. and doesn't return until 6 p.m. after walking 40 minutes home. With Uganda being on the equator, there are 12 hours of daylight from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

By the time she gets home, she helps her younger sister with homework, cooks dinner, collects water, and puts her sister to bed. This routine often leaves her starting her homework around 9:30 p.m. Unfortunately, without electricity, she has to rely on candles for light. However, due to financial constraints, her family often cannot afford candles, leaving her to struggle with her studies in the dark.

Her determination to succeed in school despite these hardships inspired us to start this project. We aim to provide sustainable lighting solutions so that children like her can study and do their homework in a safe and conducive environment. Our goal is to ensure that every child in our program has the opportunity to excel academically and achieve their dreams without the hindrance of inadequate lighting.

What Your Donation Covers

Your generous contributions to our solar project fund several critical components to ensure the successful installation and operation of solar lighting systems in the homes of those in need. Each donation covers the cost of hiring two professional electricians to safely and effectively install the solar panels and lighting systems. The equipment and materials include one solar panel, two light switches, wiring, two light bulbs with brackets, and a battery that not only powers the lights but also charges their phones.

Additionally, your donation supports a follow-up visit the following year to assess the system’s performance, gather feedback, and make any necessary improvements to ensure long-term sustainability. Your support brings light into their homes, improves their quality of life, and empowers children by providing them with a safe and well-lit environment to study.
